Very interesting article, particularly as I bought my first Kune Kune's from him. However, he goes on to say it is not advisable to keep different breeds of pigs together and I wondered, having recently purchased 2 middle white gilts if anyone else has experienced any problems with having different breeds in the same paddock.
Thanks Kath

If you are talking about "pig herds do not mix for bio-security issues"....

I assume he is talking about his large scale operation, not just having a few sows of different breeds. Commercial pig farms won't want different stock coming & going, and other pig breeders wandering around with muddy wellys.

The thing to watch out for mixing breeds in the same paddock is differences in size and growth rates will mean that the larger breed will end up getting most of the feed and bullying the others or your kunes will just get fat.

yes, i recently bought some kunes from a lady who kept tamworths with them - the kunes were so fat they could hardly walk!
you can't mix the breeds at feeding time that's for sure

I agree, a very interesting article. On the topic of putting different breeds together, has anyone ever crossed a kune with another breed? Is it possible?

I've never done it, but I've seen a few crosses.
You would probably need to give a kune boar something to stand on.
Personally I can't see the point.

only yesterday i saw some pictures of a litter of kunes crossed with a peitrain.
Why on earth would anyone want to cross a kune with anything??

you give people perfection and they want to muck it up Evil or Very Mad

Hi everyone.
Thank you for all the replies - I'm feeling much happier now with my new additions. At the moment they all live together quite happily, however I have no intention of cross breeding them and will keep both lines quite pure.
However I 'm finding it more difficult to secure the services of a middle white boar than anticipated and am contemplating using AI for them but will send my Kune's away as usual. Very Happy
